I’ve always enjoyed technology, but what I really love is building things end to end — taking a business process that’s clunky or disconnected and turning it into something that genuinely makes people’s work lives easier. Sometimes that’s a single system. More often it’s several working together: think how CCTV, access control, HR, and identity and access management can come together into one cohesive access-management ecosystem, instead of four tools that barely talk to each other.
What I do
I’m a tenured architect specializing in business solution and data architecture. What draws me to the work is the combination of leadership, problem-solving, and using technology to make organizations more efficient. I’m most passionate about data and integration — designing solutions so systems aren’t duplicating each other’s work, but still connect and support one another to form a complete ecosystem.
I also hold a PMP. I’m not always the project manager, but understanding how projects are run makes me a better architect and a better teammate. And I deliberately keep an eye on areas across IT outside my own lane — the broader my understanding of how the pieces affect one another, the better I can help teams collaborate instead of working in silos.
Lately I’ve been leaning into AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT — not to replace the work, but to accelerate how quickly I can understand new corners of the IT landscape. Learning that used to take a stack of books now takes a good conversation.
A few experiences that shaped me
One of the most rewarding chapters of my career was getting to work overseas. The intercultural side of the job — combined with seeing a site through to commissioning — taught me as much about people as it did about technology.
I’ve also had the chance to see how an industrial plant uses technology end to end: data flowing from equipment on the floor, into the process control systems, up into business solutions, and finally into the reporting and analytics the business can act on — making fast adjustments to improve the process. Watching that full loop, from a sensor to a decision, is exactly the kind of end-to-end thinking I love.
What you’ll find here
This blog is a hybrid: real experiences from my career mixed with my opinions on how architecture and teams can work better with the business to improve how a company operates.
I’m hoping colleagues at every level read it — whether you’re earlier in your career and trying to picture what’s expected as you grow, or you’re looking for ways to improve the teams and companies you’re already part of. Mostly, I want to spark conversation. I genuinely believe that sharing experiences and comparing notes is how our field arrives at better ideas and real innovation.
A couple of ground rules
On discretion: I keep these stories general on purpose, to respect the companies, teams, and people I’ve worked with. You might occasionally recognize the type of project or environment behind a story — but I will never share details that could harm an organization or compromise its security. I’m happy to talk about, say, what it’s like to roll out access control; I’ll never describe anything that could put a real environment at risk.
On comments: everyone is welcome to share their thoughts, including respectful disagreement — differing perspectives are the whole point. Bullying or tearing people down is not.
Off the clock
When I’m not thinking about architecture, you’ll usually find me spending time with my wife and our dog, traveling, or unwinding with a good movie or game.
